Hey you lot, I'm heading for Northern NSW in a weeks time and last time up there I drove the Oxley Highway which was awesome.

This time I thought I might do the road between Kempsey and Armidale, which on the map looks great, but I'm wondering if anybody has been that way in recent times and can give me some idea of what that road is like.

Also, for you NSW blokes, once I leave Port Macqaurie and head towards Sydney, is this a crap road, or is it multi lane decent roads where I can average 100 kays per hour.

Its 599kms from Armidale back to Concorde, NSW, and I'm wondering how long that's going to take in reality.

Can't help you with info on the inland routes as I usually take the scenic Pacific Highway along the coast.
Port Macquarie to Sydney via the Pacific Hghway is well sealed and mostly divided 4 lanes of 100 and 110 km/hr zones - between 4 and 5 hours from Port to Concord dependant on your right foot.

If it's the road I'm thinking of , "Armidale Kempsey Road" it's an old logging road. It has a sign on the pacific highway, saying Armidale ,so we took it for a change , then it slowly turned from tar to dirt , to a one lane logging track , with rocks the size of cows , and cows!! , it then turned into a fine rock dust , that went thru every nook and cranny of my beloved Honda Prelude.
This was quite a few years ago , but I couldn't believe a road like that was sign posted on the highway.

Maybe somebody can let us know if it's been upgraded ?? , if it's tar , it would be a hell of nice drive now.

It was one hell of a trip. and if your wondering why i didn't turn around , Well it was a one lane logging track , with a shear drop to a valley, that a 4ws prelude couldn't do a 3 point turn on , let alone a 5 or 6 point turn. I tried after about 2 hours.

Have fun Rob !

Thanks Paul,

Yes, it's still dirt so no place for a Ferrari.

But........the Oxley Highway is still an awesome drive, as is the Putty Road from Windsor to Singleton.

I have a few days off next week so I reckon I might go for a drive.

The 10 mile of bends on the Putty is awesome Rob. A little unforgiving if ya hit the bends too quickly though. I remember well!

Not sure where your route is supposed to go from Sydney, Rob, but if you wind your way up into the mountains past Blackheath and down to Oberon, the road from there to Goulburn (and the Hume) is nice fast cruising fun, and all sealed these days. We did it 4-5 years ago and it was a great drive in the Soarer. My son and I came back to Canberra that way after a trip to Newcastle.

Looking back at the map, I think we took the Jenolan Caves Road from Hartley then turn right onto the Duckmaloi Road across to Oberon. It is the Abercrombie Road south of Oberon, becoming the Taralga Road toward Goulburn. The early part around Jenolan is twisty but it opens nicely as you go further South.

Plus Lew has to find time to take some speed and murder a few prostitutes along the route. He has lots to do in that time.
